I was leaving for my part-time CNA job at 5:45 this morning, energetic and ready for a good day, when Littlest Housecat Steve scooted past my feet, thought the open door. I chased him down two flights of steps and into the parking area, where he proceeded to play the “I’m going to hide under cars and then bolt when you get down on the ground” game.
I finally realized that this could keep going for a while, and I was going to be late to work. Luckily, Huscat was awake and he came downstairs to continue search efforts for me. Look, we’ve already had one missing cat this year and that’s enough.
I was pulling into the parking lot where I drop off my car/pick up the company car when the phone rang.
“He’s safe and sound!”
*sigh of relief*
Craig explained that he’d decided to grab himself a quick cup of coffee from our apartment. On the way up the stairs, he found our cat sitting on our neighbor’s porch with a lizard in his mouth.
…and as he was telling me this story, I noticed that the key box on the company car was laying wide open, not a key in sight.
What.
After a quick phone call to my supervisor, I was driving away in what we affectionately refer to as “The Tank;” a SUV big enough to survive a Monster Truck Rally. As I headed toward my morning job, I thought “I really hope I’m not locked out.”
Sure enough, my only entry was locked. I had to ring the doorbell of the main house at 6:30 in the morning.
After a few minutes it was clear that no one heard the bell, so I rang again. Still nothing. I called my supervisor, who had now heard from me twice before 6:30 am. While all this was happening I really, really had to pee.

Eventually someone let me in, I got to a bathroom and went about my morning. It ended up being pretty stress-free and pleasant. Even better: I was done by 9:30, and had a pleasant rest-of-the-day getting things done at home. I talked to a few people about potential jobs, did an hour’s worth of yoga and started making some creative plans. There were no more minor catastrophies.
Well, the water was out for several hours. But after the morning I had, I was in no mood to complain.
