Blast from the Past

Last week I substitute-taught at my old studio for an afternoon. I taught there for five years after I moved to Houston, but haven’t been back since I got married almost three years ago. It was really great to see some of my old students again. Some of them I taught when they were beginners in first and second grade, and now they are in the studio’s Junior company, doing multiple pirouettes and beginning to go en pointe. My intermediate kids are all advanced now, and all taller than me. A few have grown so much in the last three years I almost didn’t recognize them! It was wonderful to see what lovely dancers they have grown to be.

The oldest kids didn’t know that I was going to be teaching, and they reacted with surprise when they saw me standing in the studio. I got a lot of hugs from a lot of people. 🙂

“I remember you as my teacher when I was in 8th grade, and there’s such a difference between 8th grade me and 11th grade me,” said one of the girls,”It’s like a blast from the past.”

Indeed it was. It was a great night of dance.
